Once my Java programming skills improved, I was able to create my own mods. Within the community I meet a client that asked me to a Minecraft plugin for him, after completing this he contacted me later about an Android App he would like to have built, I had zero experience in this area. The app is an employee time tracker, where they would login and be able to record their time, locations, and breaks. It was coupled with a Desktop application, again built in Java, that acted as an admin panel to manage content, and view employee time data. This project was my first step into the world of android and mobile app development. It was particularly challenging because the client would often ask for changes to difference pieces of the software to improve the user experience. Now with my knowledge of android development, the number of things I could create only increased. So, my technical skills where there, how about the combination of technical and communicational now. During my Junior year in college I took a class called programming concepts, and along with our studies we need to form a team of 4 to 5 classmates and build some software to present to the class at the end of the semester. My group agreed to develop an attendance app that allows a student to scan their phone on a reader which would check them into that class. The 5 of split up the work so that someone was either working on the android application, java desktop application, research, or documentation. There were also weekly in person meetings, along with the occasionally ‘Discord’ voice communication call. This helped us to prioritize what needed to get done, who was going to do it, and overall maintain a good pace so the work was completed within time. A few months after this was all wrapped up, while at my internship I was asked to create an application that would save the help desk time from emails and phone calls. The app simply allows the user at the company in the IT department to send a quick email out the whole department stating whether they will be out of the office today, tomorrow or some vacation/leave period. It was built using ‘Microsoft PowerApps’ which isn’t much coding, however it was new to me, and I needed to learn my way around it, in order to build the application. I think it’s important to be able to do something you haven’t before, because in high school I played tennis, and what I learned is to stay on your toes, so that when you need to adjust or change your position, you can do so easier. I was able to connect this to programming because in software, things change a bunch and you must be able to respond those changes, whether they are complete changes or just adjustments. This brings us to the now, I an entering my senior year at New York Institute of Technology, about to achieve my B.S. in computer science. I am also interning year-round with the NYC School Construction Authority in their IT department as an application developer.
